ADA Compliant signs aren’t just Braille

“ADA signage” doesn’t mean Braille only. In the ADA standards, most architectural signs must meet rules for legibility, contrast, non-glare finishes, character size, and consistent placement—and, for many door-adjacent room IDs, tactile letters and Grade 2 Braille are required. If a sign identifies a permanent room or space (like restrooms, stairwells, electrical rooms, elevators), gives directions or information about how a facility functions, or points to accessible features, it needs to comply.

Usually exempt: temporary notices, ads/marketing pieces, and standalone logos or company names.

Why it matters

Clear, ADA-compliant signs improve accessibility, safety, and wayfinding for everyone—people with low vision, wheelchair users, parents with strollers, travelers with luggage, and older adults. Good signage reduces confusion and risk, helps you pass inspection, and creates a building that’s easier to navigate.
